- [S7521] Unknown short newspaper title, February 11, 1908, Unknown, Printed in the Tuesday, February 11, 1908 edition. "Pikeville, Ky., Feb. 10. - Mrs. George Pinson is in receipt of a letter from Mrs. Anna S. Peasly, from East Stone Gap, Va,, informing her of the sad death of Mrs. W. G. Offutt, sister of Mrs. Peasly, which occurred at that place at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, February 2nd. She states that eight days before the death of Mrs. Offutt, as she was retiring for the night, a needle, that was sticking in the bed covering, ran into her right knee, penetrating far enough to pierce the nerve tissue, and caused inflammation of the veins, which caused the whole limb to swell to its utmost. She suffered the most excruciating agony for eight days, when death relieved her. She had the finest of physicians from Big Stone Gap and Bristol to attend her, and every possible effort was made to save her life. The cause of death was cellulitis - a form of blood-poisoning. The remains were taken by her husband to Smithton, W. Va., for burial in his family burying plot. Mr. and Mrs. Offutt lived here in Pikeville for a long time, Mr. Offutt being a prominent lumberman. Mrs. Offutt was a beautiful woman, a sweet, Christian lady, accomplished and refined to a high degree. She was, prior to her marriage, a Miss Lucy McKinley, of Missouri. She counted her friends here by the score. She leaves three lovely little children -- Eugene, Marguerite and Julien. Mrs. Peasly, Mrs. Offutt's widowed sister, well known here as a most estimable, Christian lady, who made her home with her, will care for the little ones. Mr. Offutt, at the time his wife was stricken, was recovering from a severe sick spell. The family have the deepest sympathy of our community."
