Retired Livestock Man Was a Veteran of the Civil War
Henry Clay Offutt, who had lived In Kansas City in 1880, died yesterday at his home, 5514 Harrison street. He was 90 years old. Mr. Offutt came to Missouri from Maryland with his family by ox-cart, settling in the northwestern part of the state. He went to war at 17 and in one raid against Quantrill near King City, Mo., he captured Quantrill's horse and the guerilla leader was forced to cross a river in a skiff to escape. Soon after the war Mr. Offutt married and came to Kansas City. He entered the livestock commission business at the Kansas City stock yards with William Elmore under the firm name of Offutt and Elmore. Later the firm name became Offutt, Elmore and Cooper. Mr. Offutt retired from business thirty-five years ago. Mr. Offutt's checker game, his hobby, always was respected. He played his first game when he was 8 year's old. He was known as Colonel Offutt among the players at. the Young Men's Christian Association.
In March, 1930, celebrating his 86th birthday, Mr. Offutt said the trouble with the world was that people did not play checkers enough. "A man who keeps interested doesn't get old." he said at that time. "I never have been bored in my life." Mr. Offutt had been at Research Hospital all last week. He was taken to his home Saturday. Surviving are two sons, Roy T. Offutt, Los Angeles, and Robert G. Offutt, 5111 Walnut street; two daughters, Mrs. John Kennish, and Mrs. Thomas Tyson, both of the home; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Hanks, Hiawatha, Kas.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren."

"Two communities mourn the loss of another pioneer mother, Jennie Hanks, who passed away suddenly at 11:00 o'clock Sunday night, Jan. 10, in Hiawatha, Kan., at the grand old age of 86 years, 6 months, and 13 days.
Jennie Hanks, whose maiden name was Virginia Offutt, was born in Parkersburg, Va., June 27, 1850. She was one of a family of eight children. The Offutt family moved to Forest City in the spring of 1852. Her father died in St. Joseph during this journey to Holt county, leaving the mother and eight children to continue the journey to their new home.
Soon after finishing her school training in Forest City, Jennie Offutt was united in marriage to E.B. Hanks, April 4, 1869, after which Mr. and Mrs. Hanks engaged in farming various farm tracts north of Oregon.
In the year 1878, they purchased a tract of virgin land about eight miles northwest of Mound City, in what became known as New Liberty township. Through sheer industry and thrift, Mr. and Mrs. Hanks built a comfortable home and reared their family. Five children were born, two of whom died at an early age.
Mr. and Mrs. Hanks finally sold their pretty farm home and moved to Hiawatha in March 1909, where they enjoyed their last years among scores of new friends.
Jennie Hanks was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a sincere and loyal friend. She was an active and prominent member of the New Liberty Baptist Church during her residence in that community and later became affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Hiawatha.
She was generous and sympathetic toward others and ever mindful of the comfort and happiness of her guests. She took a keen interest in the welfare of her family and shared their joys and disappointments.
She was very fond of pets; and pursued joyfully her hobby of cultivating plants and flowers. She took special delight in showing her garden and flowers from which she would hand beautiful bouquets to her friends.
The community and the family will certainly miss this grand old mother, her cheerful spirit, and inspiring influence. Surviving her are the following children: Etta McCurray of Mayette, Kan., L.H. Hanks of Kansas City and A.O. Hanks of Craig; also 6 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Blackledge at the Hargis Funeral Home in Hiawatha at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, after which the body was taken to the New Liberty Church and cemetery where Rev. Blackledge conducted the second service at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Offutt based on the names and ages of the children matching up with what my research has discovered in Missouri records and newspapers. The surname Offreda isn't found in any other Census until 1915, and is only found in the 1920 Census once. The 1915 and 1920 Census finds are in New York and were apparently records of individuals of Italian ancestry. Matilda A. Harmon's obituary makes note that at the age of 13 which would have been in 1852, her parents came to Missouri where 2 days after their arrival her father died, leaving the mother and 8 children. Selah E. Watson's obituary makes note that she arrived in Missouri in 1852. Virginia Hanks obitary makes note that she was born in 1850 in VA, that her family with 8 children moved to Missouri in 1852 and that her father died in St. Joseph during that move).

Selah Elizabeth Offett (Offutt) born Aug. 6, 1847, in Montgomery County, Maryland, died May 13, 1907. She moved with her parents to Missouri when five years old, and grew up to womanhood in Forest City. She married John Watson in 1869. To this union were born three sons and one daughter.
She died at her home seven miles south of Maitland. She had not been robust for a year, but seemed to be feeling better recently. She said Monday evening she would gather in the eggs. Accordingly she went to the poultry yard for that purpose. When she had been absent almost ten minutes, Mr. Watson thought she was staying longer then was necessary, and went out to see what was the matter. He found his wife lying on the ground in the poultry yard, dead.
The cause of death was pronounced apoplexy.
As a wife and mother, she was faithful, devoted and true. As a neighbor she was always ready in time of sickness or trouble to help comfort and cheer.
She united the M.E. Church when quite young, and although not a member when she died, she always held to the practical in the Christian life and endeavored to live it.
She leaves behind a husband, three sons, one daughter, two brothers, three sisters, and six grandchildren to mourn her death.
Mrs. Watson was about 60 years old, and had lived in Holt county with her husband for many years. She was an excellent woman, and was highly thought of by many friends.
The funeral took place from the house at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, Rev. C.A. Hodshire conducting the services. The interment took place at the Maitland K of P Cemetery, Maitland, MO.
